Swinburne buzzes on Open Day

Posted August 25, 2011 in category General by Heather CROSLING

Swinburne's campuses at Hawthorn, Lilydale and Prahran opened to the public last Sunday in beautiful spring weather.   Feedback I have received from a range of sources (staff, parents, students and Council members) was that the day was an overwhelming success.

This year staff in Marketing and Recruitment made a special effort to promote Open Day to ensure that we grew attendance at this critical event in the lead up to the 2012 uncapped environment and the contestable TAFE market.

We have also re-aligned our marketing budget to ensure that we command a greater share of the education market voice in Victoria.  The promotion for Open Day reached a crescendo three days before the event when Channel 9's Today Show - with an audience of over 300,000 - had five live crosses to the Advanced Technologies Centre during the morning weather forecasts, in which they featured our impressive new research and teaching facilities and the work done by our students. (The Today show segments are now up on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/swinburne)

As a result, the turnout on Sunday at each of the campuses exceeded all expectations.

More than 15,600 people attended Open Day - a 36 per cent increase on 2010.  Nearly 10,000 visited the Hawthorn campus (a 54 per cent increase at Hawthorn, and close to the total attendance across all campuses in 2010); over 1,300 visited Lilydale (a 24 per cent increase); and over 4,400 visited Prahran.

We received many unsolicited emails from the public providing very positive feedback on the day with a range of comments including:

"The campuses were buzzing."
"Amazing facilities."
"We were really surprised that Swinburne exceeded our expectations."
"We were overwhelmed with the helpful and friendly advice provided by staff and students."

One parent of a high-achieving student who was not considering Swinburne has been swayed by the campus, the enthusiastic and helpful staff and by the current Product Design Engineering student they spoke to who was so passionate, articulate and impressive in speaking about his studies.

I would like to sincerely thank staff and students who helped out at Open Day.  The strength of Swinburne's community spirit, and our shared pride in our institution, was clearly conveyed to the many visitors who came along.

It is through the professionalism, dedication and attitude of staff that Swinburne has grown to be the university that it is today.  I hope that many of you will be able to join me tomorrow at 4pm in the Hawthorn Atrium for drinks and nibbles.  The occasion will celebrate our recent successes in the Good Universities Guide and Academic Ranking of World Universities, and also acknowledge the efforts and achievements of all Swinburne staff.

With appreciation

Professor Linda Kristjanson

Vice-Chancellor
