The event showcased Swinburne's ability to provide advanced, technology-based delivery of learning, one of the keystones upon which Swinburne was granted university status.

This was highlighted with the satellite link to Canberra forming part of the ceremony, enabling The Hon. Ros Kelly, Minister for the Arts, the Environment, Sport and Territories, to congratulate Swinburne on this achievement. Optus Communications supplied the satellite link and Sony provided the large projection screen.

The new style delivery of courses, which was to be a feature of the Eastern Campus, was also promoted through the display of the Eastern Campus's interactive information kiosk. IC technologies and Apple computer assisted the Swinburne Centre for Animation/Interactive Multimedia to design the technology.

It was a victory for common sense The Hon Neil Pope, member for Monbulk and Minister for School Education, said at the ceremony.

And when Mr Phil Honeywood, member for Warrandyte congratulated Swinburne, he said With a University now, we can proudly say we've got all the foundation stones in place to move forward as a true community in this region.
