Double Win for COHST students at the SIA Education Awards 2010

Congratulations to Dan Harte and Tracey Malloch who both received awards at the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA) Education Dinner 2010, for exceptional performance in the Diploma of OHS and the Certificate IV in OHS through their studies at COHST.

Both students completed their studies at COHST through flexible delivery in 2009, whilst working in full-time employment.

Dan and Tracey were nominated for the awards by COHST staff, and then underwent assessment by an SIA selection panel. This included the quality of assessments, references and commitment to OHS practises.

Dan Harte: Winner, Category 2 in Diploma of OHS

Dan's Safety Achievements include:

  • Implementation of OHSMS to maintain certification to AS4801
  • Facilitation of on-going management reviews for principal contractors
  • Ongoing completion of audits and mentoring for key contractors on key safety standards
  • Promotion of Zero Harm policy and program to achieve LTIFR = 0
  • Improvement of OHS communications across businesses
  • Completion of Risk Assessments and reviews to develop and apply risk control solutions

Tracey Malloch: Commendation, Category 1 in Certificate IV in OHS

Tracey's Safety Improvements include:

  • Use of emergency equipment in hospital environment
  • Hand washing procedures
  • Correct technique for breast feeding to reduce MSD
  • Use of saddle seat for back support
  • Safe disposal of hospital contaminated waste

The students were awarded with:

  • Student commemorative medal and certificate of achievement
  • Book voucher to the value of $200
  • Free membership of the SIA for one year
  • Participation in the SIA Graduate/Mentor support program
  • Free entrance to Safety in Action 2011, including Gala Dinner

Fast Track your OHS education:

COHST launches the new Fast Track sessions for the Certificate IV in OHS (8-days) and the Diploma of OHS (11-days). The sessions are running from September 2010 at Hawthorn Campus only.

These Fast Track sessions are designed for those students who prefer face-to-face support and extra class participation. By attending these sessions, students will be able to complete a portion of the assessment tasks during the workshops, which means less work to be completed off-campus.

The website re-development for The Centre of Occupational Health and Safety Training has recently been completed.

Features Include:

  • Interactive contact form that asks questions based on your enquiry type
  • Database driven OHS, First Aid and Quality course index that provides more information about each COHST course
  • Integration of the COHST course training calendar with course pages
  • User centred design with more information on industry services such as course customisation and On-site training
  • New secure Trainer section that gives access to training materials

New Altona Training Location

Advanced Diploma of OHS now offered by COHST

The Centre for Occupational Health and Safety is delighted to announce the recent approval to offer the Advanced Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety (BSB60607) qualification.

Including 8 nationally recognised units of competency, the Advanced Diploma of OHS is a mixture of non-compulsory day attendance and self-paced study. Students have the option of attending day classes at the following two locations:

COHST Diploma of OHS student wins SIA award

Barry Tanner, a recent COHST graduate in Diploma of OHS was awarded by the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA) for exceptional performance in his qualification.

After being nominated by the COHST staff, Barry underwent assessment by an SIA selection panel. This included the quality of assessments, references and commitment to OHS practises.

The wait was finally over when Barry was awarded an OHS Education Award in Category 1 - Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety - at the prestigious SIA dinner on the 20th August 2009. As stated by an SIA representative The award was based on "Barry's demonstration of consistently high academic standards, practical skills and a commitment to being involved in OH&S practice".

The great achievement included:

  • Student commemorative medal and certificate of achievement
  • Book voucher to the value of $200
  • Free membership of the SIA for one year
  • Participation in the SIA Graduate/Mentor support program
  • Free entrance to Safety in Action 2010, including Gala Dinner
